Tap any timer in the list, for example the 5 minute timer, 10 minute timer or the stopwatch, then press Start. You can also type in the search box to find a time quickly.

Do the timers keep working in a background tab?

Yes. They go by your device's clock, so switching tabs doesn't slow them down. The time left also shows in the tab title. Just don't close the tab.

Will I hear an alarm when time is up?

Yes. A short chime plays as soon as the countdown reaches 00:00. Make sure your device isn't muted.
